Why We ONLY Ride Beach Cruisers on Our New Orleans Bike Tours

When you start researching bike tours in New Orleans, you’ll see companies using every type of bike imaginable. Electric bikes, multi-gear comfort bikes with handbrakes… hell, maybe even New Orleans by Unicycle (okay, I made that last one up). All bikes are good bikes...and every bike beats a car.
But at A Street Tour Named Desire, we stick strictly to classic single-speed beach cruisers.
Check out the shortish video below where I tell why, (and do a really poor immigration of my mom) —or keep reading if you are not curious what my shutters on my house look like,
There are actually 41 reasons I prefer cruisers, but my mom has been nagging me to be brief so here is three:
1. It’s All We Need in New Orleans
Cruisers are all I see on the street where I live. New Orleans is famously flat, so we don’t need to go far, and we don’t go fast. A serious jogger could probably beat us, because our only race is to go slow and take in the neighborhood architecture, murals, and history. I have a room full of bikes at home, and I still just ride my cruiser during my off hours.
2. Back-Pedal Brakes Leave Your Hands Free
Coaster brakes mean you stop simply by pedaling backward. Now, your hands should stay on the grips... but coaster brakes mean you can easily hold your phone to grab a quick photo or hold a cold drink without messing with handbrake levers or gear shifters.
3. Pure Simplicity & Maximum Comfort
All we need from you is to pedal—and on our flat city streets, that’s easy. Sitting upright on a fat-tire cruiser with a big, cushioned seat is about as close to a La-Z-Boy position as you can get on two wheels. You get to focus on enjoying the city and nothing else.
We started 18 years ago with one speed—leisurely—and we haven't pedaled any harder since.
